THEO DARLING | ARTIST BIO

Theo Darling (b. 1988 in Dayton, OH) is an American multidisciplinary artist making esoteric ceramics, textile art, and zines in Downeast Maine. Compulsively crafting peculiar things by hand from a young age, Theo learned to sew at age 7 and built their first loom out of cardboard shortly after. After exploring many artistic mediums in community college, where they ultimately fell in love with pottery-throwing, Theo moved to the San Francisco East Bay to study at California College of the Arts (and Crafts) and graduated in 2015 with a degree in BFA (hons) Ceramics. Theo relocated to coastal Maine in 2021.

In 2015, Theo Darling was a recipient of the Clyde & Co. Community Art Project award. Theo has shown work in juried exhibitions and at California Conference for the Advancement of Ceramic Art (CCACA), and has been selected to participate as a vendor in Renegade San Francisco, the American Craft Council’s West Coast Craft market, and events at Oakland Museum of California (OMCA).

Theo’s work is influenced by the natural world and inspired by dreams, weird childhood experiences, and magical thinking. Their handmade porcelain pottery is wheel-thrown, hand-painted with original designs, and carved with sgraffito details; infused with unconventional symbolism, it invites the user to take part in imaginative personal ritual. Their work in the textile and paper mediums incorporates found materials in unexpected combinations, exploring surprising connections and transforming “trash” into memorable objects.

Theo also offers professional visible mending services to bring your worn and damaged clothing and other textiles back to life in creative ways, turning flaws into features while diverting objects from landfill. They see items in need of repair as opportunities to heal our damaged relationship to the material world and practice environmental sustainability in a meaningful way.

Theo Darling works from their studio at their home in East Machias, Maine and is represented by the Machias Arts Center gallery.
